ENERGY TRANSITION: ATJ2E, WITH SUPPORT FROM EGENT TOGO, BUILDS JOURNALISTS’ CAPACITY TO PROMOTE RENEWABLE ENERGY
The Togolese Association of Journalists Committed to the Environment (ATJ2E), with the support of EGENT TOGO, organized a training workshop for media professionals on the theme: “The Role of the Media in Promoting Renewable Energy and Alternative Solutions to Togo’s Energy Challenges.”
Held in Lomé on 30 July 2026, the workshop brought together around 30 journalists from radio stations, newspapers, online media platforms, and web-based outlets. The training comes at a time when Togo is facing growing energy challenges and highlights the important role of the media in supporting the country’s energy transition.
Opening the session, ATJ2E President Hector Nammangue stressed that energy is a key driver of economic and social development. It powers businesses, health facilities, schools, and improves people’s daily lives. However, he noted that access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy remains a major challenge across many African countries, making the transition to cleaner energy more urgent than ever.
According to him, journalists have a crucial role to play in this transition by informing, educating, and raising public awareness about renewable energy solutions. “Informing is not only about reporting facts. It is also about helping citizens understand and take ownership of their energy future” he said.
With the support of EGENT TOGO, the training aims to equip journalists with the knowledge and practical tools needed to produce more accurate, engaging, and impactful stories on energy transition and renewable energy.
During the workshop, Komla Awuté, Director General of EGENT TOGO, shared key insights into Togo’s electricity demand. He explained that the country consumes around 250 megawatts (MW) during the day. However, between 5:00 p.m. and midnight, when households use more electrical appliances, demand rises to nearly 380 MW, placing significant pressure on the national power system.
He emphasized that these figures demonstrate the urgent need to accelerate investment in renewable energy and alternative energy solutions to strengthen the country’s energy security and meet growing demand.
The partnership between ATJ2E and EGENT TOGO reflects a shared commitment to empowering journalists as active contributors to the energy transition. By producing reliable and accessible information, the media can help stimulate public debate and enable citizens to better understand the challenges and opportunities shaping Togo’s energy future.
